The Buchan Caves, a breathtaking place

These caves feature displays of stalactites, stalagmites and calcite pools.

They are located at the East Gippsland region in Victoria, Australia.

The two more beautiful caves are the Royal and Fairy caves. Tours are offered every day of the year except on Christmas Day.

The creation of caves is and extremely long process. Evidence has been found to suggest that cave development in the Buchan area started about forty million years ago.

All sort of limestone decorations are featured in these caves. They include Straws, Flowstone, Columns or Pillars, Shawls, Helictites, Pool Deposits, Cave Coral, Cave Shields, Cave Pearls and Rockmilk (or Moonmilk).

Photography is permitted and the best results are obtained from flash or digital cameras. Video cameras are also welcomed provided the tour is not delayed.

The Buchan Caves Reserve contains also well maintained barbecue and picnic facilities. It is a great destination for campers and day visitors. Australian-made souvenirs are available at he visitors centre.
